IS the soaring cost of parking driving you mad?

Space is at an all-time premium, with some local councils raising prices by as much as 15 per cent.

PLAN AHEAD: “Pre-booking a spot can help you save money as it guarantees a space will be available at a set price. This is especially true for airports but also at gigs or sporting events as well as hospital appointments.

“If your trip is a regular one, consider block-booking the spot for further discounts.”

BE PRECISE: “Consider how far you’d be willing to walk to your destination, if you are able to. Widen your search area to include a short walk to your destination. Our recent research revealed that 31 per cent of people would be willing to walk up to 20 minutes to get to their final destination if it means they can save money on parking — and the good news is that it usually does.”

SPLIT THE BILL: “If you are going somewhere to meet friends or family, think about going in the same car so that you not only split the costs of parking but save money on fuel, too. You never know — you may even be treated to a thank-you ice cream for ferrying them around.”

RENT A PRIVATE DRIVEWAY: “More and more people are willing to rent out their unused driveway and using these offers considerable savings. We recently found commuters could typically save £1,200 a year by renting out a nearby driveway over using traditional parking at train stations.

“And if you’ve got an electric vehicle we’ve seen a surge of listings that come with charge points, offering further flexibility.”

ONLINE PARKING PORTALS: “Online parking platforms offer you so much flexibility with your booking and can enable you to complete many of the above tips with just a few clicks of a button, such as being able to see the price of available parking spots on a map showing your destination.”
