UNITED KINGDOM - DECEMBER 13: Pedestrians walk past a branch of the Halifax bank in London, U.K., on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007. HBOS Plc, the U.K.'s biggest mortgage lender, said writedowns and higher funding costs will hurt earnings this year, while an investment gain of about 1 billion pounds ($2 billion) probably won't recur in 2008. SEVENTEEN bank branches will close within days – impacting thousands of customers.

Data from LINK, the UK's largest cash machine network, shows the first closures will hit West Yorkshire and West Sussex on September 26.

Lloyds and Halifax

Lloyds will close it's Penny Hill Centre branch in Leeds, and Halifax will shutter its branch on South Road, Haywards Heath.

Birmingham, Southampton, and more

Four more branches will close on Tuesday in Southampton, Birmingham, Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire.

London calling

And Thursday will see Halifax, Llloyds and NatWest cease trading at four branches across London, Oxfordshire, West Sussex and West Yorkshire.

The end of the week

Closures will continue through until Friday when Barclays will tie up its operations at three branches in Devon, London and Worcestershire.

In total, six NatWest, five Halifax, three Lloyds, and three Barclays branches will be closed – the full list of closures can be found below.

What you can do if your local branch closes

Many people still rely on the face-to-face contact that a trip to the local high street branch can offer.

If you have been left stuck by one of these closures you should be able to do most basic banking tasks at your local Post Office.

This will not apply if you need to apply for a loan or open a new bank account but they should be able to help you with basic banking.

Many banks also offer a mobile banking service where the bank brings a bus to your area where services that are usually available at your branch can be obtained.

If you are unsure how to access the services that your local branch used to offer it is best to give them a call and ask what options are available.
