Shoppers Unhappy with Higher Price for Smaller Gift Boxes
Customers at Tesco have voiced their anger over the purchase of Celebrations gift boxes that are priced at more than double the cost of the standard tubs. Shoppers have unknowingly bought the smaller 385g versions of the Christmas favorites online, instead of the 600g standard version. The gift box currently sells for £6 compared to £5 for the traditional tub, or £4 with a Clubcard, meaning shoppers are paying up to £2 more for far less.
Similar Appearance Leads to Customer Confusion
Customers have complained that the products look very similar on the website, making it difficult to discern the size difference. The gift box is octagonal in shape rather than round, causing further confusion. Some customers have expressed their disappointment on the Tesco website, stating that they thought they were purchasing the larger tub and feel that they have been ripped off.
Low Ratings and Complaints on Tesco and Ocado Websites
The Celebrations gift boxes have received low ratings on both the Tesco and Ocado websites, with customers expressing their dissatisfaction with the smaller size and higher price. Several customers on the Ocado website have also complained about feeling ripped off. Reena Sewraz, a money expert at Which?, advises shoppers to compare unit prices in order to find the best deal for their needs both in-store and online.

Unit pricing is meant to help shoppers compare similar items of different sizes. It allows consumers to see the unit cost of a product where its price is shown. Stores are obligated to show unit pricing, but there is no requirement for consistency in the units used across similar items. This can make it difficult for shoppers to accurately compare prices. Previous research by Which? found that 72% of people struggled to determine the cheapest item when comparing products in-store.
