Hard-up families can claim up to £350 of free cash within hours through the government's Household Support Fund (HSF). The fund, which has a total of £842 million, is aimed at helping cash-strapped families who earn less than £50,000 per year. Each council is given a portion of the money to distribute, and the grants you can receive depend on your location. Some councils offer bank transfers, while others provide food or utility bill vouchers as assistance. The fund was initially set to end in March of this year but has been extended until April 2024, giving households more time to receive support.

How to apply and eligibility requirements

If you live in Tandridge, in east Surrey, you can apply for a grant of up to £350 if you are a low-income earner. Single households can receive £150, while those with children can get £350. Applications for the scheme will be open from 10 am on December 11. To be eligible for the grant, you must be over the age of 16, live in the Tandridge district, and be in financial difficulty. You will need to provide evidence of your financial situation, such as bank statements and arrears letters.

Support for those who need it most

The council aims to provide support to those who need it the most, including households with dependent children, individuals with disabilities or health problems, those receiving state pensions, lone parents, survivors of domestic abuse, individuals leaving care or hospital, and those facing emergency crises such as fires or floods.

Other options for support

If you don't live in Tandridge, you can inquire with your local council about what they offer through the Household Support Fund. For example, Dudley residents may be eligible for up to £275, Bracknell Forest residents can receive £195, and Nottinghamshire residents can get £100 in free cash. If you are not eligible for the funding, you may still be entitled to a cost of living payment of up to £1,350, which is being distributed by the government. This payment is split into three instalments worth £301, £300, and £299.
