The Six Nations tournament has begun, and if you have a family of food lovers, it might feel like you're feeding an entire team. But fear not! We've got you covered with budget-friendly meal ideas that will keep those bellies full and your wallet happy.

1. Boast a Roast

A roast dinner is a classic and filling meal for the whole family. Opt for a whole chicken, which tends to be the best value roasting joint at around £2.20 per kilo. If you're looking for even more savings, consider a pork shoulder joint, which can be around half the price of a leaner leg. Don't forget to pile on the vegetables, and you can save even more by opting for wonky carrots at just 50p per kilo at Morrisons.

2. Make Mincemeat of Meals

Mince is a versatile ingredient that can be used in various dishes like bolognese, meatballs, and chilli. To cut costs, choose a pack with a higher fat content. Beef mince with 20% fat is usually under £5 per kilo at Sainsbury's, while premium mince with 5% fat could be double that. Simply skim off the excess oil when cooking. Buying larger packs tends to be cheaper, and you can bulk up the meal with lentils for added goodness.

3. Veggie Good Dinners

Going meat-free every once in a while is not only good for your health but also your wallet. Stock up on pulses, potatoes, and chunky vegetables like cauliflower and carrots for filling vegetarian meals. Try dishes like sweet potato and cauliflower curry, vegetable chilli with mixed beans and rice, or veggie lasagne. To save money and reduce waste, use frozen vegetables and make meals with dried pulses, even if you don't have time to soak them.
