Nathan, who lives with Friedreich's Ataxia, a progressive genetic disease, put aside £50,000 from his £11,000-a-month disability support over a span of many years. He had forgone various approved social activities and even provided bank statements to the council every quarter to prove he was not misusing the funds.

Nathan's upcoming trip to Florida, which he describes as "essential," is his first holiday in 14 years. He planned to spend six days there with his two carers, seeking a much-needed break from the confines of his home.
A Shocking Demand: Council Refuses to Pay for Carers
However, Nathan was taken aback when the council refused to cover the travel and accommodation costs of his carers. Despite appealing the decision, he lost the case and had to use £33,000 of his savings to pay for his care.

The council explained that its social care plans are designed to support care needs along with specified social activities. As Nathan had chosen not to engage in these activities, the surplus funds were to be returned. The council clarified that the funds provided to individuals for care and support should not be considered as part of their income.
