BLACKPOOL, Liverpool and Hull have suffered the highest spikes in unemployment, official figures have revealed.

In contrast, Cambridge, Oxford, Reading, Aldershot and Milton Keynes saw the lowest jump in people claiming jobless benefits.

Blackpool has seen the biggest jump in people claiming jobless benefits — up 3.4 per cent from last month

The analysis by the Centre for Cities think tank lays bare a North-South economic divide caused by coronavirus.

It ranked increases in unemployment in the UK’s 63 largest cities and towns.

One in 11 people in Blackpool are claiming the benefit according to the figures — up 3.4 per cent from last month.

Liverpool saw the second highest increase with an additional 2.9 per cent signing on in April.

Some 7.6 per cent in the city are now unemployed, while Hull suffered the third highest increase, leaving 8.7 per cent of the city’s population out of work.

Cambridge saw a 0.9 per cent increase in jobless numbers over the same period.

Just 2.5 per cent of the city’s workers claim the dole.

Fellow university city Oxford is second least affected in the table of Britain’s 63 largest towns and cities, suffering a 1.1 per cent increase to 3.1 per cent.
