This method of illegal migration was prevalent before the surge in small boat crossings that began around 2019.

A Home Office spokesperson affirms the government's determination to disrupt the business model of people smuggling gangs and combat all forms of illegal migration. Measures include increasing fines for smuggling in vehicles to £10,000 and implementing legislation to promptly remove those who enter the country illegally.
