And while viewers have had no idea what was going on, tonight her heartbreaking actions were discovered.

With Amy struggling with life in general, she took her time in getting ready for her birthday meal tonight, forcing the rest of her family to go out before her.

Alone in the house, she fetched a hidden box in her bedroom and began to self-harm.

However she was found by Sam Mitchell, who helped her get cleaned up and took her to the pub, promising she wouldn’t say anything.

But when they got to the pub, even Sam couldn’t let Amy’s torment go and she secretly spoke to Jack about what was going on with his daughter.

As she told him, Amy walked up and realised that her secret was out.

The emotional scenes left viewers in tears.

One wrote: “Amy’s doing it because she misses her mum i’m in tears #EastEnders.”

A second said: “This sam and amy scene and the roxy mentions is breaking my heart ?.”

Another added: “??Poor Amy self harming and sam walked in her doing it in her room  #EastEnders”

As the storyline progresses, viewers will also see the impact of Amy’s mental health on her family and loved ones, and highlight the ways in which they come to terms with self-harm and learn to support Amy as effectively as possible.

EastEnders has worked closely with leading charities on this storyline to ensure it is portrayed as realistically and as sensitively as possible, including Alumina, Mind and Samaritans.

Soap boss Chris Clenshaw explained: “It was really important for us to explore a storyline focused on Amy’s mental health challenges – the issues she faces impact so many young people and their families across the UK so we hope this will help to raise awareness and to start a conversation amongst viewers.

“We wanted to ensure the story was portrayed with utmost care, which is why working alongside charities such as Alumina, Mind and Samaritans was essential in ensuring it was depicted as sensitively and accurately as possible.”
