Union Strike Threatens Supply of Popular Drinks

Fans of Ribena and Lucozade in the UK may soon face a shortage of their favourite drinks as factory workers go on strike, according to union chiefs. More than 180 workers from the Unite union, who are responsible for manufacturing the beverages, are set to walk out in a pay dispute.

Possible Ribena Shortage If Strikes Proceed

The strike, scheduled to last a week starting from Monday, will take place at the Royal Forest Factory in Coleford, Gloucs. If the strike goes ahead, it could impact the availability of both Ribena and Lucozade on store shelves. The Unite union claims that Suntory, the Japanese company that owns the brands, has failed to honor an inflation-linked pay rise.

Strike Result of Deal Loyalty Issues

The union expressed their disappointment with Suntory, stating that the lack of loyalty to the pay deal has led to the strike action. According to the union, this will be the first strike at the plant since the 1970s. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham criticized Suntory for not providing a fair pay increase, noting that the company has ample financial resources.

Hope for Resolution and Future Focus

Suntory director Karl Ottomar expressed hope for a swift agreement to be reached, allowing both parties to move forward. Ottomar mentioned that the participating employees have already received two pay increases since 2022.
