How to Sign Up
To take part, you must sign up through your energy supplier and have a smart meter. Not every energy company offers this scheme, but British Gas, EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy, Ovo Energy, and Scottish Power are among those that do.
Participating in the Scheme
The National Grid activates the scheme during peak periods, such as in cold snaps, and energy firms will contact customers. You will receive a few hours' notice of the sessions, giving you the opportunity to plan ahead. During these sessions, you can cut down on your electricity usage by switching off power-hungry appliances like washing machines, tumble dryers, and power showers. The sessions can last anywhere from half an hour to four hours.
Rewards and Benefits
The National Grid pays cash to suppliers for energy saved during the Demand Flexibility Service sessions, and this money is then distributed to customers. EDF estimates that people can earn up to £100 over the winter. However, the exact reward you receive depends on your supplier, as some may take a cut to cover costs. Most suppliers convert the cash into bill credit. British Gas is one of the firms passing on 100% of the savings to customers paid by the National Grid.
