Price Surge on Basic Cupboard Staples

Traditional cheap foods like spam, corned beef, and tinned pasta have experienced price hikes of up to 80% in the past year, delivering another blow to the cost-of-living situation in the UK. An investigation conducted by The Sun on Sunday revealed that even basic food items are now much more expensive at supermarkets.

Heinz Beef Ravioli: 80% Increase

For instance, a 400g tin of Heinz beef ravioli in tomato sauce was sold for £2 at Waitrose last week, compared to only £1.10 a year ago, marking an 80% price increase. Asda, Sainsbury's, and Tesco have seen an 18% hike in the price of the same tin, while Morrisons' price has risen by 14%.

Spam: 42% Surge in Price

Value food spam, which has experienced a recent resurgence in popularity, has also seen an increase in price. Waitrose is now selling a 340g tin of Spam chopped pork and ham for £3.55, up by 42% from the £2.50 charged last year. Asda, Sainsbury's, and Tesco have also witnessed price increases of 18%, 17%, and 15% respectively.

Tinned Meatballs and Pot Noodles Also Affected

Other products like tinned meatballs and Pot Noodles have also been hit by rising prices. A 380g tin of Fray Bentos meatballs costs 95p at Asda, up by 12% from 85p last year. Sainsbury's has experienced a 20% increase, while Morrisons has seen a 14% hike. Additionally, chicken and mushroom King Pot prices have jumped by 39% at Morrisons and 16% at Asda.

Corned Beef Hits Record High

The cost of corned beef has reached record levels. Asda is charging £3.25 for a 340g tin of Princes corned beef, a 16% increase from the £2.80 charged in 2022. Sainsbury's and Tesco are each selling the tin for £3.50, which is £1 more expensive than two years ago. Waitrose raised the price from £2.60 in 2022 to £3.55, while Morrisons increased it from £2.50 in 2021 to £3.59.

Experts Sound Warning

Consumer expert Jane Hawkes warned that "nothing is immune from greedflation" and emphasized the increasing difficulty for shoppers to save on everyday grocery costs. Martyn James from HOAR's Squeeze Team added that the cost-of-living crisis has affected not only big brands but also supermarket staples, with prices skyrocketing across the board.
